Watch: Samsung shows off budget foldable phone concept [video]

The Korean manufacturer shared a short promotional video at the Samsung Developer Conference 2019 (SDC19) of a new budget foldable phone with a clamshell design.

The 24-second YouTube video shows the folding mechanism in detail, and showcases how the user interface changes when the device is folded.

It’s also clear from the video that the new concept incorporates a punch-hole camera, which is placed at the top in the middle, similar to the Galaxy Note 10.

The huge notch from previous designs is nowhere to be seen, and while the first Galaxy Fold expands into a tablet, the new design folds into a more compact design.

This way, you have a standard-sized smartphone screen at your disposal, which you can fold into a smaller device when not in use, similar to the flip phones of yore.

When will Samsung’s new foldable phone be launched?

If we’re lucky, Samsung will showcase the new foldable phone design at the upcoming Mobile World Conference (MWC2020); which will take place from 24 to 27 February.

If that is the case, we could possibly see a launch of the new device around April or May 2020. Samsung initially planned to launch the first Galaxy Fold in April 2019.

Unfortunately, the launch had to be postponed after several review models broke while out in the field. Samsung had to go back to the drawing board to iron out the wrinkles (or rather, the hinges).

What will the new foldable phone be called?

Rumour has it that it could be called the Samsung Galaxy Fold 2; despite that the fact that this patent took the Internet by storm as the Galaxy Fold 2.

Let’s Go Digital uncovered that the new device is code-named Bloom; which may be marked under product code SM-F700. However, this could not be confirmed at the time of publishing.

What will the new foldable device cost?

The price for the first Galaxy Fold is R43 999 – with pre-orders selling out within the first day. It may be wishful thinking at this stage, but the new device is believed to be considerably cheaper.

We’re assuming that price estimates would start popping out around the internet once the other anticipated flip phone – the Motorola Razr – is released.

The Razr could see a launch date set for the end of 2019 or first quarter of 2020; hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Razr has a reported price tag of €1 500 (or R25 300 at the time of publishing.) Samsung’s new foldable phone might be tad bit pricier, though.
