Samsung files patent for foldable phone with vertical notch and extra sensor

Samsung, the current leader in the foldable phone field, is reportedly planning to release a new Galaxy Fold next year. Several models are currently in development, and this is what we know so far.

Back in August, Samsung filed a patent for a phone similar to the Galaxy Fold. For ease of reference, we referred to it as the Galaxy Fold 2. The patent hinted a smaller notch, unlike Samsung’s first Fold.

The current Fold has a fairly wide notch at the top right of the screen. Samsung has now filed a patent for a similar design, but with a vertical notch and an extra sensor. The patent document can be viewed here.

The document was filed with The Haque System on 14 November 2018 already; followed by the patent being added to the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) database in June 2019.

Included in the patent documentation are three designs that contain clues about the untitled device’s features and camera. Based on the information provided, the Let’s Go Digital team was able to create the renders used in this article.

The ‘new Fold’s’ camera

While the current Samsung Galaxy Fold has two cameras and two sensors – a 10 MP and 8 MP depth camera and two sensors placed to the right of the lenses – the new device will come with a dual-camera setup and three sensors.

Where the sensors in the current Fold are placed above each other, the sensors in the upcoming device will be placed next to each other; utilising the entire width of the notch.

The purpose of the additional sensor is unfortunately not clear at this stage.

Different notch variations include moving the notch to the right-hand side, the left-hand side, or placing it at the top; but horizontally instead of vertically. The different positions are illustrated in this sketch:

When will Samsung release the next foldable phone?

While it’s hard to accurately predict when Samsung will release their next foldable devices, the consensus around the Interwebs at the moment is that it could be revealed during the Mobile World Congress in 2020.

If that is the case, experts predict that the device could even go on sale from as early as April 2020. Incidentally, April 2019 was the month set aside for the first Galaxy Fold launch, before Samsung withdrew review models.
