It’s easy to become disillusioned while manufacturers try to outdo each other, however, one brand may finally be pushing the envelope in new and exciting ways.
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha: Here’s what we know
Xiaomi introduced its upcoming flagship device by putting the futuristic – and mind-boggling – smartphone in the hands of high-profile YouTubers to try it out.
Popular YouTuber Marques Brownlee shared a hands-on look at the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha. It might just be the coolest smartphone design we’ve seen. Take a look for yourself.

Xiaomi filed a patent for the prototype in 2018 and shared its first render in 2019. However, the designs were only approved and added to the WIPO and CNIPA databases on 10 January 2020.
The patent document was simply titled Mobile phone. It contained eleven images in total which shows both smartphone models with a flexible screen. Read more about it here, and view the patent document here.
The patent documents showed the device to consist almost entirely of screen-surface. Furthermore, a triple camera system will be integrated in the screen by means of a punch-hole camera setup.
So, while the concept is not all that new, seeing the phone in all of its crisp HD wonder truly blows you away. Brownlee explains that the phone is still a prototype.
“Similar to some things we saw at CES, this isn’t a real phone with a price tag that has a shipping date or anything like that. This is just a functional prototype to show a cool idea they had”.
And that idea is: What would happen if you took those curved edge displays and just curved them right over the back, all the way around to the back of the phone, so you’re just looking at full 110% screen”.
Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha provisional specs
The specs are pretty high-end too, with Brownlee remarking that Xiaomi “didn’t have to sacrifice too much to make this form-factor happen”.
The phone will reportedly be released with a Snapdragon 855+ processor, as well as 512GB of UFS 3.0 storage, 12 GB of RAM and a 4050 mAh battery. Amazing, right?
“The material, the specs, and of course the display are pretty next level. There’s the frame of the phone which as a titanium alloy, which is harder than stainless steel. […] The camera strip on the back is ceramic”.
When will the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha be released?
No release date has been confirmed as yet. If the rumour mill is to be believed, Xiaomi is having difficulty with manufacturing certain aspects of the phone.
It’s understandable, though. What sets the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha apart is its wraparound display. It’s a first-of-its-kind design, and we can only imagine that it’s not all that easy to break new ground. Just ask Samsung.
