Samsung files patent for budget-friendly foldable Galaxy device450907173e6d6b55a802f2e0e0130c07

Samsung went back to the drawing board and fixed their first foldable phone. By the time the Galaxy Fold was launched, it was a huge success. Pre-orders even sold out in South Africa on its first day.

Samsung has since been working on various new foldable phones designs, from what is referred to in the media as the Z Fold, to the upcoming Galaxy Fold 2.

Let’s Go Digital recently unearthed a new foldable phone patent filed by Samsung. The clamshell model features an elongated display, similar to the recently introduced Motorola RAZR.

But wait, there’s more. In addition to a new foldable smartphone patent, Samsung also seems to be working on a foldable tablet. What a wonderful time to be alive.

Samsung Electronics filed a design patent with The Hague International Designs Bulletin back in May 2019. The patent, simply titled “Mobile telephone”, was approved in November 2019.

The document includes a brief description and about 34 images. The images show three models which differ minimally from each other. For starters, this device won’t fold in the middle.

What sets the new Galaxy Fold design apart

The design differs from the current Fold and can perhaps best be described as a “broad-folding phone”. It folds horizontally but opens to creates a fairly wide and long flexible screen.

Furthermore, a similar foldable Samsung phone was patented in August. This time, however, there is no front display available. It is possible that Samsung has designed it in such a manner to keep the costs low.

If the product makes it to market, and we really hope it does, I could be considerably cheaper than the first Galaxy Fold. Based on its tablet-like design, we’re going with the name Galaxy Tab Fold for now.

The patent mentions a speaker and USB connector, but there are no images of a camera in the patent. However, that does not mean that the camera will be excluded.

Samsung could be considering to go the under-screen camera route. In fact, this might be the first phone to be introduced with an under-screen camera in 2020.

Whether this technology can be applied immediately in a foldable model is still unclear. It doesn’t seem like an easy fete, but we’re hoping Samsung pulls it off.

Samsung’s competition

That said, Samsung isn’t the only company out there experimenting with folding tablets and laptops. Lenovo already filed a patent for a foldable laptop, the ThinkPad X1.

In addition, Microsoft is also working on a folding dual-screen device, called the Microsoft Surface Duo. Microsoft’s foldable tablet is due to launch at the end of 2020.

Another new player that will introduce a smartphone tablet next year is the Chinese TCL. The company has already demonstrated a prototype device with two folding lines, making the phone expand into a large 10-inch tablet, similar to Samsung’s Z-Fold design.

It is therefore especially important for leading manufacturers to profile themselves as innovative during the early stages of the foldable device revolution.

At this rate, 2020 is shaping up to be an interesting year.
