RAZR 2020: Motorola files patent for modular folding phone450907173e6d6b55a802f2e0e0130c07

The Motorola RAZR 2019 was announced just a few weeks ago, and the company is reportedly working their next foldable phone design already. If all goes according to plan, the device will be announced in 2020.

Revolutionary new patent approved

The patent document, which can be viewed here, describes a unique design similar in some ways to the RAZR 2019 which folds horizontally. However, there are a few differences.

The integration of a fisheye camera and a modular system is unexpected. This is included so that additional hardware components could be added, such as a projector or a high-quality stereo speaker.

The patent was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). It has since been approved and published in August 2019. In addition, it was added to the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) database as well.

The device could most likely have a front display which will be visible when the phone is closed or folded. Simply open the device to access a narrow elongated screen slightly more compact than the Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate.

Razr’s Modular design

The battery is placed in the lower part of the housing so that the centre of gravity is in your hand. Smaller and lighter components are installed in the upper part, including the speakers and microphones.

For the front display, you’ll find a lower resolution screen. This screen will also include basic information such as the time, date, weather, incoming messages and calls.

Another striking design element is the top of the device. This part of the phone will not be functional when unfolded. Based on the information from the patent, the top part will protrude backwards at an angle.

The team at Let’s Go Digital postulates that this would provide better stability when holding the phone. If you decide to put down the telephone, the T-shape part could serve as a support point as well.

Furthermore, the phone will reportedly come with three cameras: on the front, on the rear, and on the top. The camera that faces the front is said to be a fisheye camera and could possibly take 360 degrees images.

The patent also mentions a 12 megapixel sensor and a structured light IR emitter. This could be used for facial recognition, but it’s all speculation at this stage. We will have to wait for official confirmation from Motorola before we get out hopes up.

If all goes according to plan, this will be the first folding telephone with a modular system. Even though several modular smartphones have been manufactured in the past, Motorola will be leading the way in the foldable phone arena.

Motorola has shown with the RAZR 2019 that they are not afraid to experiment with groundbreaking ideas so we could probably expect more revolutionary designs and patents from them in the coming days.
