New iPhone 12 Pro series features 5G and A14 Bionic chip

While still late to the 5G race, Apple’s iPhone 12 series also features the powerful A14 Bionic, as well as Apple’s all-new Ceramic Shield design, a pro camera system, and the much-anticipated LiDAR Scanner.

The iPhone 12 Pro series

Apple’s A14 Bionic chip

The A14 Bionic chip is currently the fastest chip in a smartphone. According to Apple, the chip “powers impressive computational photography features including the all-new Apple ProRAW for more creative control in photos”.

The A14 Bionic is equipped with the “fastest CPU and GPU by up to 50%” when compared to Apple’s competitors. It’s this chip that will ensure for console-quality gaming experiences.

Furthermore, the A14 Bionic chip will be “pushing the limits of machine learning (ML)” as it features a 16-core Neural Engine capable of an 80% increase in performance, the equivalent of running 11 trillion operations per second.

‘Reimagined pro camera system’

Some would say it’s about time for an upgrade, but I digress. Apple’s reimagined pro camera systems include an expansive Ultra-Wide camera and a Telephoto camera “with an even longer focal length on iPhone 12 Pro Max”.

Everyone was excited to hear that iPhone 12 Pro models will also feature a new LiDAR Scanner for immersive augmented reality (AR) experiences. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said:

“A state-of-the-art LiDAR Scanner means users can experience AR like never before, and also offers benefits to the camera with faster autofocus in low light and the introduction of Night mode portraits”.

“NASA is using LiDAR technology for its next Mars landing. iPhone 12 Pro uses a LiDAR Scanner to measure how long it takes light to reflect back from objects. So it can create a depth map of whatever space you’re in”.

iPhone 12 availability

You won’t have to wait that long if you’re eager to get your hands on a new Apple flagship device. Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 Pro will open on Friday 16 October in the US, with availability beginning 23 October.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max will be available for pre-order Friday 6 November 2020; stores will begin to carry stock on Friday 13 November 2020. Pricing and availability for the SA market yet to be determined.

Joswiak said the Pro series is a “huge leap for iPhone”. It will be delivering Apple’s “most advanced technologies to users”. He added:

“Our tight integration of hardware and software enables incredible computational photography features like the expansion of Night mode to more cameras and introduces support for HDR video with Dolby Vision. […] These experiences and so much more make this the best iPhone lineup ever”.

Finally, 5G

According to Apple, the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will “deliver an advanced 5G experience on a global scale”. This despite it being the last major manufacturer to enter the 5G race.

Taking to Twitter one day after’s Apple’s Hi Speed event, Samsung smugly tweeted:

“Some people are just saying hi to speed now, we’ve been friends for a while. Get your Galaxy 5G device now”.

Nevertheless, Apple says that 5G on iPhone means “improved speeds for faster downloads and uploads; higher quality video streaming, more responsive gaming, real-time interactivity in apps, FaceTime in high definition, and much more”.

iPhone devices in the US will also support millimeter wave (MM wave, or millimeter band). The Pro Model’s Smart Data mode will assess 5G usage and needs, and extends battery life when necessary.
