Galaxy S20 FE: What you need to know about this budget Samsung smartphone

Samsung on Wednesday 23 September 2020 unveiled the Galaxy S20 FE (Fan Edition). It’s basically an S20 that doesn’t have all the expensive parts while still housing all the key Samsung features we know and love.

The Galaxy S20 FE comes in six different colours, sports an OLED 6.5-inch display and has a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth graphics and animations. Here’s what you need to know.

Addressing pandemic problems

Let’s be real, we all want an Ultra, or a Plus or any one of the other flagship devices currently on the market. However, not everyone can afford the astronomical price tag that comes with a premium device.

Enter the S20 Fan Edition: a premium device doesn’t skimp on specs. Samsung told The Verge that the Fan Edition wasn’t initially part of its 2020 lineup. Dieter Blom writes:

“[Samsung] tells me that when it originally launched the S20 lineup this past mark, an FE version wasn’t in its plans. But then the pandemic hit — Samsung’s S20 event was one of the last that many tech journalists attended”.

Samsung decided to manufacture the Galaxy S20 FE shortly after the March 2020 event.

Galaxy S20 FE performance

Samsung heard you and unveiled S20 Fan Edition. It might be a budget device but it doesn’t lack power.

The Galaxy S20 FE is equipped with 4 500mAh battery, 6GB of RAM and the snappy Snapdragon 865 processor. It supports wireless charging, too, and is IP68 water resistant.

The phone is available in Cloud Navy, Cloud Red, Cloud Orange, Cloud Lavender, Cloud Mint, and Cloud White; the ‘Cloud’ being an indication of the matte finish. And that, my friends, means that fingerprints won’t be all that visible.

Camera specs

Unfortunately, the Fan Edition doesn’t sport Samsung’s premium camera options, but the Galaxy S20 FE’s camera is far from inferior. It has a 12MP main sensor coupled with a 12MP ultrawide lens and 8MP telephoto lens.

The front-facing selfie camera is a whopping 32MP. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G’s rear camera incorporates advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to pull in more light, so your shots come out detailed and colourful.

Of course, no Samsung device would be complete without the beloved Single Take feature. Single Take enables you to shoot for up to 15 seconds and then let your phone do all the hard work.

Once the process is complete, you’ll find a variety of optimised photos and videos in the Gallery.

In short, if you want a device with an all-day battery coupled with a professional-grade camera and powerful processor, then the Galaxy S20 FE is the phone for you.
