Oppo, a leader in the industry when it comes to mobile innovation, is currently working on a smartphone device with 15 x hybrid zoom and a horizontal camera setup.
Guangdong’s Oppo Mobile Telecommunications filed the patent with the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) back in July 2020.
The patent was approved on 6 November. The supporting documents, which can be viewed here, shows a slim phone with a prominently-placed horizontal camera. Here’s what we know.
Oppo’s latest patent
With this device, the quad-camera setup is placed horizontally. As per the patent, schematics, one of the three lenses is shown as a square, which means that it is a zoom camera.
Extra space has been allocated to the right of the camera system, presumably, for the flash to be integrated. As reported by Let’s Go Digital, the publication who unearthed the patent:
“The positioning of this horizontal camera has a big advantage; you can never accidentally put your finger in front of the lens while shooting. Something that unfortunately sometimes occurs with current models, as more and more manufacturers choose to reserve the top left corner for the camera system”.
On the other end of the spectrum, LGD also explains that due to “the increasing number of functions on a smartphone, less and less space remains available within the housing to be able to process all components”.
So to place the camera system in the corner of a device “leaves relatively more space than when you place it horizontally”.
A selfie camera lens is visible as well, placed centrally in the middle on the front of the device, which reportedly sports a full-screen display with rounded edges.
We also noted that the hole-punch camera is placed relatively high, in compared to some of the manufacturer’s previous smartphones.
Based on the information obtained from the patent, 3D designer Jermaine Smit, aka Concept Creator, was able to produce a series of product renders for LetsGoDigital, in order to better visualise the design.
So while nothing is known about the camera specifications and configurations at this stage, we can at least show you what Oppo might have in mind with the upcoming Reno device.
It’s also safe to assume that Oppo is now ready to manufacture a smartphone with a 15x hybrid zoom, seeing as several phones in the Oppo range are already equipped with 5x or 10x hybrid zooms.
